The association Ukrainians For Arts Culture and Education (UFACE), is a non-profit organisation, founded in Madrid, Spain, by Kateryna Shevchenko.
The scope and focus of UFACE is the development and support of Spanish and international projects that have at heart the enhancing and appreciation of Ukrainian cultural and artistic values. Education is also dear to the organisation core interests especially in supporting young Ukrainian students in Spain, guiding them through a better understanding of their cultural roots and art of their country of origin.
Objetives
At UFACE we believe that culture and the arts play a fundamental role in the identity of a group. In this regard – due mostly to the pervasive and lethal effect of soviet communism to homogenise all nations under one rule, whilst eradicating the past and destroying most artistic and culture expressions outside of the totalitarian sphere – Ukraine is in a particularly important crossroad in history, and in a position, after over a hundred years, to rediscover her roots, her voice and her destiny.
Current Schedule of Events
For the year 2023/24, our programs focus mainly in cinema and music. We continue hosting a wide range of films across all genres via our festival ‘Semana del Cine Ucraniano’, based at the Circulo de Bellas Artes of Madrid. By presenting the best Ukraine has to offer, to a new and very committed Western public and Ukrainian diaspora, we believe we are helping with the foundations for a wider identity collective abroad which is of great importance.
Furthermore, our program focuses on the commissioning of unique music scores to be performed along some of the best Ukrainian silent films. For this music schedule, we are proud to announce the premiere of a new music score for the Ukrainian classic film ZEMLYA (Dovzhenko 1930), courtesy of composer Luke Corradine. This is the fourth score published in a century for this immortal film, and the first ever by a non-Ukrainian. The premiere took place at the Film Academy Museum in Los Angeles, on the 23rd of July. This is both a historical achievement in the field of film music, but also a milestone in the international collaborative efforts between Ukrainians and Western artists and talents.
